Fireguard: Thermal Protection for Steel Storage Tanks

May 29, 2015 | Posted in Blog

One of the many safety concerns for steel storage tanks that contain fuel or other combustible liquids is fire safety. Fires can cause major damage to a facility as well as loss of human life. Numerous regulations are in place that mandate construction requirements for tanks that hold combustible liquids. The Fireguard system offers exceptional thermal protection for aboveground steel storage tanks.

Regulations

Perhaps the most well-known regulation concerning thermal protection for steel storage tanks is UL 2085, which covers “shop fabricated, aboveground atmospheric Protected Tanks intended for storage of stable flammable, or combustible liquids that have a specific gravity not greater than 1.0 sand that is compatible with the material and construction of the tank.” NFPA 30 and 30a are also used to “provide safeguards to reduce the hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids.”

Fireguard Thermal Protection

Fireguard is a thermal protection construction method for steel storage tanks.

Features

  • Double-walled construction with lightweight thermal insulation material in between the inner and outer steel tank. This material is 75% lighter than concrete and exceeds requirements for the UL 2-hour fire test.
  • Thermal insulation material insulates the product in the tank from temperature changes outside, which reduces emissions to the environment.
  • Standard tank testing procedures can be used to test tank tightness, unlike other thermal protection designs.
  • Compatibility with a wide range of fuels and chemicals, including biodiesel and ethanol.
  • Leak detection in the tank’s interstitial space.
  • Can be used with support designs for seismic requirements.
  • “Meets temperature requirements when the furnace test was extended to 4 hours.”
  • Up to 75,000-gallon capacity.

Fireguard thermal protection for steel storage tanks meets all of these standards:

  • UL 2085 (Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.)
  • NFPA 30, 30A (National Fire Protection Association)
  • IFC (International Fire Code)
  • CARB Standing Loss Control testing requirements for air emissions (California Air Resources Board)
  • STI Standard F941 for Thermally Insulated Aboveground Storage Tanks
