Winter Weather Can Cause Issues for Your Underground Storage Tanks

Electrical wiring
During periods of frigid temperatures, the water inside your electrical conduits can quickly freeze, which can negatively impact the proper functioning of your electrical line leak detectors, sensors, probes, and submersible pumps. Be sure to have your electrical components inspected to ensure that water is not able to accumulate due to faulty seal-offs and open junction boxes.

Tank tightness
When water is allowed to enter your storage tank, it can ruin both the contents as well as the tank itself. Freezing temperatures can cause your risers to crack, allowing water to seep in, and water can also enter through the top fittings of your tank. Your tank should be inspected for tightness to be sure that no water is able to penetrate.

Condition of your pipes
Due to ground movement that is created during freeze/thaw cycles, older piping can be prone to cracking, breaking, or failure at the joint during the winter. While your leak detection alarms and devices can often warn of a problem before it becomes catastrophic, it is crucial to take the time to inspect these devices to ensure they are functioning properly. Your piping should also be routinely inspected according to your region’s compliance standards.

Sump performance
The sump in your underground storage tank prevents water from accessing certain critical areas of your tank. When collected water–such as in the spill buckets–is allowed to freeze, it can damage your tank’s electrical components, flex connectors, and piping components. Your sump should be inspected monthly during the winter to prevent such issues from occurring.
